LECTURES

WEEK 2:

2. Lecture 1

Our second lecture is talking about the tutorial of adobe illustrator basics. We are introduced to pen tools, and also the games called "bezier" for us to master the pen tool. Beside that, we are given a task to make 3 character. Must have colors, clear using of shapes, storyline, and character. The important thing is the character needs to be in the same style, texture, and proportional, so that the result will come out good.

WEEK 4:

4. Lecture 2

We are briefed to prepare for the submission tomorrow, including the e-portofolio, the reference board, the silhouette, sketches, and also the final result of the three characters. The characters should be colored. In this lecture, Mr. Hafiz also said that we have to keep update our progress so that our work could be graded. In practical, we were given a tutorial offline class by Mr. Hafiz about coloring, pen tool, shapes, warp tool, poses, how to scale, color gradient, and how to sample color.

Beside lectures, we are given a lot of material and tutorial videos by mr. Hafiz.

Task 1: Exercise — Character Design

1. PROCESS

We are given the task to make 3 character. First, we are required to make the moodboard so that the character has a clear personality, then we are told too make the silhouette of those character to see if the pose is good or not (must be in adobe illustrator).

My characters are all penguins but they are using animals costume. This idea appeared because I'm a fan of blind boxes, and I am inspired by Mofusand blind box (which is a cat wearing costumes). I researched through the internet to find some species of penguins. I finally applied those species to my character:

1. Pibby the crab

Figure 1.1, Pibby's Reference Board

The first thing I do after making the sketch is trace it into Adobe Illustrator with pen tool to create the base of the character. The dominant shape here is a square-ish shape. Also when I trace it on AI, I changed the pose because the sketch version one looks awkward.
Figure 1.2, Pibby's Silhouette

After asking for feedbacks, I continue to make the coloring and details for the character. For Pibby, I was thinking to make the color red for the dominating color since it was a crab (obviously). I use the gradient to make the shading for it. I also started to make Pibby's face details and color it.
Figure 1.3, Pibby's flat color

Pibby is an emperor-chick penguin, so I want her color to be gray and white. I added the gray afterwards (in the gradient).

Figure 1.4, Pibby's gradient color

After doing the basic gradient, mr. Hafiz said that the color is too vibrant (I feel so too), so I finally changed the color into a softer one. Beside that, I also added the lighting effect, so that the highlight and shadow is clear. Lastly, I added texture->grain to make it more interesting.

2. Paxy the Axoltl

Figure 1.6, Paxy's Reference Board

This character's dominant shape is like triangle. I use the pen tool for tracing this shadow in Adobe Illustrator.

Figure 1.8, Paxy's flat color

For Paxy, I went for pink color for the axolotl. But surprisingly I struggled when I tried to color Paxy because the color seems didn't match each other. So, I tried to shade it a bit lighter.

After that, I started to make the shadows for the lighting. Basically I'm repeating the steps from the crab one to color this. And for the final touch, I added some texture too.

3. Ploopi the turtle

Figure 1.11, Ploopi's Reference Board

As mentioned earlier, I immediately trace my sketch into Adobe Illustrator. I want this character to look sleepy always, so I make her sleeping with its shell. This character's dominant shape is like a half circular.
Figure 1.12, Ploopi's Silhouette

For Ploopi, I want green to dominate this character. At first, I thought that the costume is cute if it covers the arms, turns out it looks weird. So, I changed it not to cover both arms and legs. I worked a lot with gradient tools, especially the body part.

Figure 1.14 , Ploopi's gradient color

I use blue and green to dominate this character, because those are the main color. I created the shadow and highlight based on the color's tone. I experimented a lot with the color to make it vibrant and alive. Also, I added texture for my last step.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 2
Mr. Hafiz checked my sketch, and told me it was all okay, but the axolotl (paxy)'s shape could be more triangular.

WEEK 3

I showed my silhouette to Mr. Hafiz, which he approved and I may started to give the character's details. Also he give tips on how to do better character poses.

WEEK 4
I showed my colored version of my character, all is fine except the Crab one because the red is too strong.

REFLECTION

Experience:
This task were hard for me but in the same time it makes me understand perspective and proportions more. I also got to explore a lot of ideas in this task as well. Also, I got to recognize more of the tools in adobe illustrator, especially the pen tool and gradient tool (I use two of it the most). But the more I practice, I feel like I'm enjoying the process, especially when it comes to coloring (although I'm stressing about the lighting).

Observations
I should study more about proportions and perspective, because I'm lacking there. Besides, I should keep practicing adobe illustrator too, so that I will get used to it.

Findings
Poses proportion, perspective, and the character's personality is important for character design. Without that, we wouldn't make a good character. Also, progress is critical for our grades.
