LECTURES

WEEK 4:

We are given a brief about the next task, which is photo manipulation and recoloring black and white photo. We got a tutorial video for both of it. For the Photo manipulation one, we are required to use variety of Photoshop's tools such as the selection tool, brush, filter (for blurring, noise, and ripples), and adjustment. The recoloring black and white photo are also using selection tools, mask, but we also use the adjustment layer->solid color.

TASK 1B — Digital Imaging Exercises

3.1. PART 01: Photo Manipulation

PROCESS

1. Shazam & Hearst Castle

We are required to follow the tutorial that was given by mr. Fitri. There are Hearst Castle background and Shazam's photo. Firstly, I use the selection tool for selecting Shazam (1), and then copy paste it into the Hearst Castle background (2). Then, I add noise to match the quality of the background, matched the color, and added shadow using brush (then I use gaussian blur)(3). Finally, I duplicated the Shazam and flipped it, then erase it a little and added a ripple to make it like a reflecting shadow in the pool (4).

2. Me and Hearst Castle

After trying the Shazam one, we have to replace the Shazam with our own photo. I choose my best photo that fits the criteria for this task (full body, good lighting, and eye level angle). Same as before, I use the selection tool for selecting my photo (1). I duplicated the selected photo and arrange it at the Hearst castle background, but this time I flipped the photo because the pose is better if it flipped (2). I added some noise and even gaussian blur (only a little) to make the quality match, and matched the color also. After that, I added the shadow with black colored brush and gaussian blurred it (3). Lastly, I duplicate my photo and flipped it, erase it a little and adjust the color to be darker, and added the ripple effect to make it like a reflection shadow in the water(4).

3.2. PART 02: Recoloring Black and White Photo

PROCESS

1. Recoloring Black and White 01 (Tutorial)

We have to follow the instructions in the tutorial in order to work on this task. Firstly, I swatched the skin and hair color based on the image that mr. Fitri gave to us (1), then I selected the hair to color it->solid color (adjustment color)->color dropper tool (pick the color I swatched)->change the blending mode into "soft light" (2). Then, I repeat all those step into the other parts to color it (3, 4). Finally, I added the background color. I want it to look more natural, so I didn't highlighted the eye too much.

2. Recoloring Black and White 02

For this exercise, we are allowed to choose one of the photo that mr. Fitri provided. I choose this to be colored. I am repeating the same steps as the tutorial one. Selection tool->solid color (adjustment color)->pick a color->change the blending mode into "soft light" (1-4).

REFLECTION

Experience: This project was fun and really makes me explore about Photoshop's tools. At first, I'm quite confused about how to use it. I have experimented a lot in the using of selection tool, adjustment layer, mask, and also filters. I'm struggling at the shadow because I'm quite confused how the shadow would drop. The more I practice, I started to feel used to using it. Overall, I'm having fun in this project.

Observations: Through this projectI realized that selection tools are more useful than I thought before. Also, I find that we have to be detailed to modify things because even the smallest adjustments could affect the overall picture. Understanding proportions and lighting are also important if we want to do photo manipulation.

Findings: I realized that my understanding about lighting, shadows, and proportions are still not good enough, and I will practice that skill. Also, the basics of Photoshop are important, and I will need to explore more about the skills. Overall, with photo manipulation and recoloring bnw, we have to be more detailed and be skilled.
